Attendance

At Sidlesham Primary School, we believe that good attendance is essential for children to succeed.

Being in school every day helps pupils to learn, build friendships and feel part of our school community.

Our Expectation

We aim for all pupils to achieve at least 96% attendance wherever possible.

We expect pupils to:

  • attend school every day

  • arrive on time

  • be ready to learn

We know that even small amounts of absence can have a significant impact on progress.

Working Together

We take a support-first approach to attendance.

We recognise that absence is often a sign that a child or family may need support. We work closely with families to understand any barriers and provide help where needed.

Our Family Worker, Hester Johnson-Cadwell, plays a key role in supporting pupils and families with attendance and wellbeing.

Reporting Absence

If your child is unwell, please contact the school office by 9:00am on the first day of absence.

If we do not receive a reason for absence, we will contact you to ensure your child is safe.

Punctuality

The school day begins at 8:30am.

  • Pupils should arrive by 8:40am

  • The register closes at 9:10am

Arriving late can disrupt learning and may be recorded as an unauthorised absence if persistent.

How We Monitor Attendance

We monitor attendance closely and take early action where needed.

Attendance is reviewed regularly to:

  • identify patterns of absence

  • provide early support

  • ensure all pupils remain on track

Where attendance falls below expected levels, we will work with families to improve it.

Attendance Support

We use a graduated approach to support attendance:

  • 96%+ – Excellent attendance

  • 92–95% – Monitoring

  • 90–91% – Attendance concern

  • Below 90% – Persistent absence (additional support provided)

Support may include meetings, attendance plans and involvement from external services where appropriate.

Attendance and Safeguarding

Attendance is an important part of safeguarding.

We follow up all unexplained absence on the first day and may carry out additional checks if we are unable to contact families.

This ensures that all pupils are safe and supported.
